Shunka Japanese restaurant

I consider myself as a big Japanese food lover, but too bad there's only 3 Japanese restaurants (including Sushi King) at my hometown (yala, I stay at small town so I can be very jakun at things xD)

Anyway, there's a new Japanese restaurant at town and friends and I went try it out lately.

(pardon for the poor photo quality)

The name is Shunka, 旬香日本料理. This is the first Shunka outlet at Taiping. Others are at Penang and Kedah.

They say their Matcha is one of their must-try. There's a few Matcha desserts available in the menu, but I am too full already, save it for next time la!

Unagi rice set

Chicken teriyaki set

Unagi Tamagoyaki

Sushi Katsu

Sake Onigiri

Cosmos bento set

Here's something I wanna share.
Before my visit, I read a lot of comments in a chat group in FB about this newly-opened restaurant. There're actually mixed reviews about it, some say the food is nice, service is good, but there's lots of mosquitoes(?), some even say the restaurant is a bit small. There're also comments about how slow the food serving is and how rude the servant is.

During my visit, I realize the servants are polite (including the boss), service speed is acceptable, and taste wise, good! I don't know if we were lucky but we actually din't have much complains about the dinner.
In fact, I think I am going to visit this restaurant again!

I know how powerful social medias are these days (especially in FB), with just one negative comment and hundreds of 'shares', someone/some place even a restaurant can get 'famous' instantly.
But I think we shouldn't be so sarcastic and mean when it comes to reviewing a restaurant (for example), there're things we should consider first before we make that angry judgment. Like, is the restaurant new? Is the restaurant full house that time?

We cannot deny the fact that things will be a little messy and kelam kabut in a newly-opened restaurant, everything has its first right? We should be a bit more considerate and patient if we were to dine at situation like this (unless if it's too much la) Plus we are talking about a restaurant at a small town like Taiping, how much can you expect? It's not located at a 5 star hotel wert!

Well I say all these because I read how some people criticized about the management of this restaurant. Luckily the boss are polite and apologized for whatever troubles caused. Kudos to their attitude!

Okay enough statements from me ;)
Let's see what this kepo boy up to! Busy wiping people's wall.... >.<

Friend managed to snap this photo before I took my hand phone away from Aden xD

Hubby din't join that night cause he was feeling a bit under the weather so Aden and I wallop his portion along xDD

Anyway these are people who shared the bill with me that night ;)

Price wise, nothing much to say, it's that kinda standard la! (You'll know what I mean if you eat Japanese food often)

  1. I love to eat Japanese food too so if I live in Taiping, I will surely go to eat here too. Super like the Unagi Tamagoyaki and Unagi Rice Set. So Aden will grow to love Japanese food too since from young he starts to accompany his pretty mommy to eat Japanese food.

  2. I guess if the people are just honestly sharing their experiences it should be ok because it won't stop Japanese food lovers like us from trying out the restaurant. In fact it will prepare us so that we do not have high expectations. Without high expectations, we will not be disappointed with the food and service. :)

Haha, true also, we won't feel so disappointed if we din't expect so much~

  6. Love unagi and chciken terayaki...not fond of anything with a lot of mayo. Don't mind if it's their own-made special dressing and it's nice, not the one straight from the bottle that one would find at salad chicken rice stalls everywhere.

  13. Thanks Hayley for such a thoughtful view-sharing!

Having worked in servicing line back in uni time and now working in F&B, I understand how hard is it to handle a food outlet and all we want is some considerations, be it when on site at the restaurants or after that on social media.

I also want to stress that tastes and demands from every person are different hence the reviews online are very subjective. I've been to places which got a lot of bad reviews but found myself enjoyed my experience there as well! So you should go try it yourself before making a conclusion! :)

    1. You're welcome la, I am just saying what I feel.

True, all are subjective, and like I said, depends on luck also, I am glad I din't encounter anything bad during the dinner ;)

  14. I'm a Japanese food lover as well, when hanging out with friends, Japanese food always my 1st choice!
Since you often have 1 day trip to penang, you can come here to enjoy more varieties of Japanese food when you getting bored with your hometown one :D

  15. I think the Japanese restaurants here quite standard lah. Can't expect too much but good enough. I usually like bento because got a bit of everything. I agree that on our first visit, can't draw conclusion too fast on the service. Maybe they are new and need a bit of time to adjust or it so happen that that day is a bad day for them. If the food is good, I will still give them chance.

    1. True, bento is quite worth.
Same here, if food is good, I will sure go back again.

  20. only three Japanese restaurant including Sushi King?? so to me, there will only be two choices left.. is this new Shunka being included already?? hmmm, it actually says "umai" (うまい) right under its name woh, haha, so they must really mean it when they say the food is delicious~~

    1. oh matcha desserts?? sorry ah, but i do not know why lah, i drink green tea or matcha itself alone, but i really do not like any other things made of green tea lor, haha!! weird hor?? maybe they put too much green tea extract or matcha powder in making the desserts, so the flavor is too overwhelming for my liking.. if milder then i guess i would accept it.. just like the green tea kit kat i bought from Japan (and gave to you all) last time..

      Delete
    2. the food look quite okay.. errr, sorry for saying the word "quite okay" because you know i'm just back from Japan so all in my mind are still the illusions of the food i ate there, haha!! 難免有比較一下的喇, not to say i sound snobbish and bragging lah.. similarly also, we cannot expect to find very nice nasi lemak or CKT if we are in Japan right?? hehehe :p

    3. leave the food aside, i find the place very cosy and the deco also looks nice.. the painting on the wall is so nice leh, maybe that's what that keep the kaypoh Aden keep wiping his hands on?? hahahaha.. and one photo both of you were looking at the phone, and you were still wearing your specs.. the next photo, both readily posed for the photos already.. haha!! very camera sensitive lor both of you 兩母子.. :p

      Delete
    4. you are true lah.. we don't have to be so mean to criticize like those 毒舌老師 lah.. can criticize but then also mind our language lor, and not only criticize but i think we also have to give constructive suggestions.. else just being negative, people also may not get what you actually want.. if you can tell some suggestions or alternative, that would make the idea way clearer lor.. but then good that the boss responded to all the comments and sincerely apologize for all the shortcomings.. but really, he doesn't have to do so also lor..

      Delete
    5. hahaha, standard price for Japanese food.. errr, at least you think they are charging the standard price and not overcharging lah.. good wat, nice food, good service and reasonable price.. and i am sure they have improved a lot after being criticized about the hiccups they had earlier.. while improving, i do hope they can also maintain the standard lor..

      Delete
    6. Haha now you know how 'lao beh' Taiping is!
      Yes, 3 including Shunka.

Oh really? I am ok, anything green tea/matcha I also like ;)
The green tea kit kat I like, not too sweet!

Haha I understand, here punya Jap food memang cannot compare to the real Jap food in Japan la!

Yes, that poster on the wall is nice, and their wall decorations (the circle thing) is nice too, simple yet modern!
Camera sensitive? Haha! Already trained ma! xD

True, can give feedback/suggestions but not too mean la! What for critisize people til that extend right?

And you know what, I went back to eat at Shunka just now, and I can see some improvements already, minor but already very pleasant =)

近期所用的美容产品分享篇

*还没参加抽奖游戏的朋友们,快快按这里吧~ 到今晚10点罢了哦!* (For those who have not participate in the Bangkok giveaway, click HERE before 10pm today!* *帮我的家换了形象,还好吧?^^ *
好久好久没来篇像样的华语post咯! 今天就算牺牲美容觉也得呕出一篇来回馈我亲爱的读者朋友们,我知道有时看太多鸡肠对眼睛不好 xDD 怎样,我抵錫吗?:p
Hmm

Hot product, LATOJA (涵曦)!

BFF trip to Bangkok 2013: The food post

Bangkok is not only a heaven for the men shopping but also food! I've actually Google and blog hopping beforehand to see what's worth to eat at Bangkok, can only chose the most popular ones as we were there for only 4 days 3 nights, a very rush trip.
I've filtered out those food we ate during the trip which I think worth mentioning.
@ Food court, Platinum Mall Green curry chicken rice
Beef noodles
Fruit crepe
The food court is so big here in Platinum Mall, hundreds of tables are provided but almost all are occupied.

Dessert @ Swensen, Platinum Mall

(pale looking face, first day after touching down) Swensen is not in my itinerary, we decided to go here instead of Mr Jones Orphanage at Siam Center cause of the location. Siam Center is further away from where we stay, but Platinum Mall is just about 10 minutes walk from the hotel. End up, no regrets! Much cheaper and yummier compared to Malaysia.

T&K seafood, Chinatown  (It's easier to get here by metered cab)

By far…
